On February 22nd, The 74 Million, an education news website, reported that the hacking group Vice Society had released hundreds, if not thousands, of psychological evaluations of special education students from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The leaked information allegedly contains personal details such as names, diagnoses, family immigration status, and allegations of physical and sexual abuse. Following The 74’s report, the authorities have been alerted.
The Twitter account of LA Schools has posted updates about Dream Act applications, Anti-Bullying Day, and Eva Longoria. Meanwhile, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s account has tweeted about school building improvements, Narcan, and a new Portuguese language center. However, the LAUSD website has not provided any updates on the breach that was first reported over Labor Day weekend in 2022, since September 30.
The only statement related to the breach came from IT infrastructure senior administrator Jack Kelanic, which was distributed upon individual request and not posted to the district site or Twitter. According to news stories, Kelanic’s statement revealed that the 500 psychological evaluation forms analyzed by The 74 Million were mainly from former students born in the late 1980s and 1990s. He also stated that 60 of the leaked student assessments were from current students.
