The computer system of one of Barcelona’s main hospitals has been crippled by a ransomware attack, leading to the cancellation of non-urgent operations and patient checkups.
Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic has been hit by a ransomware cyberattack, resulting in the cancellation of 150 non-urgent operations and up to 3,000 patient checkups, officials confirmed on Monday. The attack, which occurred last Sunday, affected the hospital’s computer system at its laboratories, emergency room, pharmacy, three main centers, and several external clinics. Hospital director Antoni Castells said the system could not be restored to normal, and there is no timeline for when it will be fixed.
The Catalonia regional government’s Cybersecurity Agency is working to restore the system, but it is uncertain when it will be functional. Hackers called “Ransom House” orchestrated the attack from outside of Spain. The hospital’s press department said all written work was being done on paper, and new urgent cases were being redirected to other hospitals in the city. Access to patient records and communication between units have been affected.
