CompTIA estimates that net tech employment will grow from 9.2 million jobs in 2022 to 9.4 million in 2023, an increase of about 2 percent. That’s according to the latest “State of the Tech Workforce” report from the Computing Technology Industry Association, or CompTIA. Data scientists, data analysts, cybersecurity analysts, and cybersecurity engineers are the technology occupations expected to see the largest growth rates in 2023.
Notably, CompTIA only projected 8.6 million tech workers in 2022 in last year’s report, suggesting that 9.4 million could be an undercount.
Top Growing Tech Jobs In 2023 Data science and cybersecurity took the top two spots of this year’s report, as they did in 2022. Jobs in web design, software development, quality assurance, and IT support also ranked high for growth.
The report’s definition of tech employment includes technical roles at technology companies, technical roles at non-technology companies, and nontechnical roles at technology companies.
The growth of tech jobs comes at a time when multiple tech vendors are cutting employee rosters amid growing inflation, the possibility of a recession in the near future, and a tightening of IT budgets after high demand for technology during the height of the pandemic.
Amazon Web Services (AWS), Accenture, Microsoft, Kyndryl, Marvell Technology, and Rackspace are among the tech businesses to announce or conduct layoffs in recent days.
Other top jobs on the list include:
- Software developers
- Software engineers
- Software testers
- Chief information officers (CIOs)
- IT directors
Despite the challenges posed by inflation and the possibility of a recession, the tech industry remains one of the most promising and fastest-growing sectors of the economy. As the world becomes increasingly digital and reliant on technology, the demand for skilled tech workers will only continue to rise.
The CompTIA report highlights the key areas where job growth is expected to be the highest in the coming years. Data science and cybersecurity, in particular, are likely to see significant expansion as companies seek to protect their data and gain insights from the vast amounts of information available to them.
In addition to these high-growth areas, the report also notes that there will be opportunities in web design, software development, quality assurance, and IT support. As businesses continue to rely on technology to run their operations, there will be a need for skilled workers to design, develop, test, and maintain the systems that keep everything running smoothly.
While the growth of tech jobs is certainly good news for workers in the industry, it’s worth noting that not all companies are expanding their workforces. As the report mentions, some tech vendors are cutting employee rosters amid inflation concerns and tightening IT budgets. However, the overall trend is still one of growth and expansion, making the tech industry a promising field for those looking to build a career in a fast-paced and rapidly-evolving sector.
In conclusion, the CompTIA report provides valuable insights into the state of the tech workforce and the areas where job growth is expected to be the highest in the coming years. While there are challenges and uncertainties to navigate, the overall outlook for the tech industry remains positive, and there are plenty of opportunities for skilled workers to build successful and rewarding careers in this exciting field.
